Amy Waggoner - Event Organizer for The First Annual Free To Breathe 5K Run/Walk in Atlanta, GA.

Lung Cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S. yet is significantly under-funded. Less money is spent on lung cancer research than on the next three top cancer killers.

The National Lung Cancer Partnership mission is to decrease deaths due to lung cancer, and help patients live longer and better, through research, awareness, and advocacy. They plan on accomplishing this is by: raising awareness of the deadly impact of lung cancer upon both women and men, increasing funding for lung cancer research, and improving patient care by educating and empowering patients and healthcare professionals.

Amy Waggoner has initiated the first annual Free To Breathe 5K Run/Walk here in Atlanta on August 21st in Virginia Highlands in order to raise awareness and funds for research.

In Georgia alone, Approximately 6,280 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in Georgia this year, 17 people each day. (American Cancer Society). With more and more people dying every day, it is crucial to be involved to help raise awareness.

Alina Carbonell , Recruitment and Education Specialist, The Icla Da Silva Foundation.

The Icla da Silva Foundation is an organization that recruits bone marrow donors for the national Be The Match Registry and provides support to those suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases treated by marrow transplants. With recruiting 38K potential donors a year, Icla is hosting its first event here in Atlanta, A Dance of Hope [get tickets], on June 25th at the Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta in order to raise funds to help offset the cost of donors registry cost.

The Icla da Silva Foundation was established in 1992 after the death of Icla da Silva, a 13-year-old Brazilian girl who lost her fight to leukemia and was unable to find a donor. Alina Carbonell has similar story with her sister who lost her fight with leukemia about 9 months ago while awaiting a donor. Since her sister’s death, Alina feels it is her duty to fight for others and help them find a match.

There are many in need of bone marrow transplants and in saying that, statistically only 1 out of 20,000 is potentially a match. With that said, many more are needed and what scares people away is the unknown, this interview takes you through the donations process and the procedure.
