SLIDELL, La. — A juvenile who was reportedly making a pipe bomb in a backyard near Slidell, Louisiana, was seriously injured went the bomb detonated.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office on Facebook said that on Friday they were called out to a house in the 500 block of Winbourne Drive near Slidell.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that a juvenile was injured in the hand and they were taken to an area hospital.
First responders told WDSU that the boy had serious injuries to multiple parts of his body.
“Making homemade explosives can be very dangerous not only to yourself but other people but very dangerous,” St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Devin Coulon told the news outlet.
The sheriff’s office said their hazardous device unit was called out to the area but said that they do not believe any people or structures are in danger.
The age of the boy has not been confirmed aside from the sheriff’s office saying he is a juvenile and WDSU reporting that he is a teenager. It is also not clear why the boy was making the pipe bomb in the first place.
No one else was hurt, The Associated Press reported.
